(Somewhat) Guided Hike + Workshop
10-3 pm

The workshop will kick off with a loosely guided hike along the rugged, wind-swept coast of Cape Disappointment that will provide plenty of opportunity for the capturing and sharing of nature. Participants will be encouraged to post something from their explorations to social media during this time.

Back at the Sou’wester Lodge, we’ll warm up with some tasty soup and begin to delve into some of the nuance around ‘sharing nature.’ We’ll screen a film presenting some very different examples of artists sharing nature and hear a variety of philosophies from them about their process. We’ll use this as a springboard to sharing workshoppers' own posts from the day and to discussing the varied inspirations, methods and intentions behind sharing nature.

From landscape photography to selfies to collage and experimental film, we’ll talk about how nature-sharing brags, reveals, provokes, educates and experiments. Perhaps most importantly, we’ll tackle the question of “What stories are we trying to tell when we share nature?” For those who seek a more practical-oriented talk about the best tools and compositional techniques of capturing nature, there will be many experienced hands in attendance happy to comply.

We’ll wrap up our time together with the opportunity to enjoy the Sou’wester’s lovely all-cedar Finnish sauna.

Our hope is that participants will leave with fresh food for thought when it comes to how they interact with the natural world around us, new eyes for the images they “like” on social media, and new considerations for their own storytelling.

All events are at the Sou'wester Lodge: 3728 J Pl, Seaview, Washington 98644

“I think a lot of novices have very romantic ideas about sitting by a lake and reading a book in the afternoon, but when you’re a long distance hiker, there’s no time to stop and read a book.”
